Rare total Lunar Eclipse on Dec. 21, 2010 !

RARE LUNAR ECLIPSE: The lunar eclipse of Dec. 21st falls on the same date as the northern winter solstice. Is this rare? It is indeed, according to Geoff Chester of the US Naval Observatory, who inspected a list of eclipses going back 2000 years. "Since Year 1, I can only find one previous instance of an eclipse matching the same calendar date as the solstice, and that is Dec. 21, 1638," says Chester. "Fortunately we won't have to wait 372 years for the next one...that will be on Dec. 21, 2094."

WHEN TO LOOK: The total eclipse lasts more than an hour from 02:41 am to 03:53 am EST on Tuesday morning, Dec. 21st. Any time within that interval is a good time to look. For other time zones, consult Shadow & Substance's animated eclipse.

The eclipse is also a good measure to show how clear the atmosphere, especially the stratosphere, is.

January 17, 2009: Massive Fireball Lights Up Sweden Sky!

Video of a massive fireball was captured in Sweden as stunned residents witnessed night turn into day. Last report was near the southern tip of Sweden near Malmo. This celestial event occurred at approximately 11 AM Pacific (Jan 17th or 8 PM (Sweden). 911 received a large number of calls frightening many of the area residents. 

Astronomer Gunnar Larsson-Leander from University of Lund says: "Indications suggest that it was a large meteor that entered the atmosphere and burned up. Även Peter Linde, President of the Astronomical Society Tycho Brahe, has an observatory in Oxie outside Malmö. He believes it was a meteor. "It is extremely rare for such bright meteors, so it grieves me that I missed this phenomenon. It happens maybe once every ten years at any given location." It is yet to be determined if the meteor made impact, or shattered upon entry. Areas mentioned spread from Southern Sweden to Denmark to Norway.

The Real KGB UFO Files

An accompanying letter was written by the Deputy Chairman of the Committee for State Security USSR, N.A. Sham.

NASA Briefings And TV Coverage Schedule For Phoenix Mars Landing

WASHINGTON -- NASA news briefings, live commentary and updates before and after the scheduled Sunday, May 25 arrival of the agency's Phoenix Mars Lander will be available on NASA Television and on the Web. Entry, descent and landing begins at 4:46 p.m. PDT on May 25, when the flight team will listen for radio signals indicating that Phoenix has entered the top of the Martian atmosphere. 

The spacecraft must perform a series of challenging transformations and activities during the seven minutes after it enters the atmosphere to slow it from 12,000 mph to 5 mph and a soft touchdown. The Phoenix team will be watching for radio signals confirming the landing at 4:53 p.m. More than half of previous international attempts to land on Mars have been unsuccessful.

New Radar Maps of the Moon  

NASA has obtained new high-resolution radar maps of the Moon's south pole--a region the space agency is considering as a landing site when astronauts return to the Moon in the years ahead.

"We now know the south pole has peaks as high as Mt. McKinley and crater floors four times deeper than the Grand Canyon," says Doug Cooke, deputy associate administrator for the Exploration Systems Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters. "These data will be an invaluable tool for advance planning of lunar missions." There is evidence of frozen water that can be split into oxygen to breathe and hydrogen to burn as rocket fuel--or astronauts could simply drink it. There are thought to be tall polar mountains where the sun never sets might be a good place for a solar power station.
